Let’s talk about sex

Start the conversation with half-day sex education workshops for kids and parents.

Empowering Kids & Parents

Let’s Bee Real offers engaging half-day workshops around the topics of puberty, body safety, consent, and sex without shame or fear. Created around inclusive and progressive sexual education curriculums, the workshops are designed to help youth better understand how their bodies work and empower parents to be their child’s best resource. Each session is facilitated by Natasha and Kelly, separately or together.

All of our workshops meet kids and parents where they are, offering age-appropriate curriculums that provide accurate, science-based information positively and compassionately. Choose from parent-child or kid-only grade-level workshops, then reach out to friends with kids around the same age to create your own group.

We can’t wait to get to know you.

Groups & Hosts

Reach out to friends to create your group. You will need 4-7 pairs for the parent-child workshops and 5-10 kids or teens for the grade-level sex education workshops. We recommend that both the Puberty & Sex Education workshops don’t have more than a two-year spread (i.e., 5 & 6th, 6th & 7th, all 6th, not 5th-7th). Each participant will select their workshop & the grade of their child on their Schedule Your Workshop form.

Next, ask someone to be the host. Typically, the organizer hosts, but if someone else is willing, it’s an easy gig. The host will need a quiet room, allowing everyone in the workshop to sit (kids on floor pillows work) and walk around in small groups. Some hosts provide snacks for the break, while others ask attendees to bring their own.

If you don’t have a group but are ready to choose a workshop, that's no problem. Complete the Looking for a Group form. We will contact you when we create a group that fits your request or if a formed group is able to welcome more people.

Schedule

Now that you’ve chosen your workshop and gathered your group, you can pick a date! Complete the Schedule Your Workshop Form, and we will contact you within two days to confirm your workshop date. Once we have your date, you’ll send the RSVP form to your group, and we'll take it from there.

Meet the Team

  • Natasha Ulack | Founder & Facilitator

I am a mother to three children. My husband and I moved to Austin in 2005, and because of the incredible community of people who became a part of our lives, we never left.

For most of my life, I have enjoyed working with children as a teacher abroad and in the States, a preschool director, a director of children and family programs, and the youth director at the University United Methodist Church (UUMC).

Like many people in my generation and before, I received little sex education at school or home. This lack of knowledge left me relying on friends and experiences to learn about my body, intimacy, pleasure, and safety. I wanted more for my children.

Thanks to UUMC, in 2013, I enjoyed participating in the inclusive and progressive Unitarian-based sexual education curriculum training, Our Whole Lives (O.W.L.). In the summer of 2019, I also trained as a facilitator for the Unhushed sexual education program. Thanks to these curriculums and experience as a teacher, I have created a variety of 3-hour to 4-hour workshops to bring age-appropriate, accurate information to young people.

I am not a social worker or a medical professional. I am a parent and an educator. I’m doing this because I’m passionate about helping youth to understand better how his/her/their body works and appreciate their beauty and complexity. Equally important to me is helping parents feel empowered to be their child's best resource.

I look forward to working with you and your children.

  • Kelly Edwards | Facilitator

I am a parent to two kids. I moved to Austin in 2001 for a graduate program at the University of Texas and, like many others, decided to stay and make Austin my home.

I have been working and supporting children and families since 2008. I have worked as a Camp Director at El Ranchito, as a bilingual teacher at Odom Elementary, and as an Elementary Spanish teacher at Saint Andrew’s Episcopal School. I have also supported children and families by leading Sunday School, teaching sex ed, and facilitating a parenting group at the University United Methodist Church. I have also taught parenting classes using the Circle of Security curriculum at the YWCA and the Travis County Correctional Center. In 2015, I changed my career and returned to school for a Master of Arts in Professional Counseling. Currently, I work as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist.

As a child I did not receive quality sex education at school or at home. At church, sex was a taboo topic that was only talked about in terms of sin. As a result, I felt a lot of confusion and shame around sexuality and my curiosity about sex as an adolescent. When I was approached by my church to teach sex ed and be trained in the OWL (Our Whole Lives: Lifetime Sexuality Education), I jumped at the opportunity. The curriculum, especially the way it normalizes sexuality and has an inclusive approach, exceeded my expectations. I even use elements of the training in working with adults as a therapist! I strongly believe that providing children with quality, science-based sex education sets them up for making good decisions about their bodies and their relationships throughout their lives.

  • Yes. We lead complete O.W.L and UnHushed workshops at the University United Methodist Church. We alternate K/1 and 4/5 annually on Sundays from January until Spring Break. We alternate Middle and High School classes annually with a three-day boot camp workshop on the first summer weekend. Please complete the Looking for a Group form if you want your child to participate. Availability is based on space.

  • The space requirements are minimal. If participants have a place to sit or children can sit on a pillow on the floor in front of a parent, that is all we need. Other options include hosting workshops outside or using the available space at the University United Methodist Church with advanced notice.

  • Yes, we teach at private schools in the Austin area. Please get in touch with us for more information.

  • Yes, we create groups when we have the minimum number of interested participants looking for the same workshop. If there is space, people without groups are sometimes given the option to join an established group. Please complete the Looking for a Group form if these options work for you.

  • Yes! The information given is relevant before or after an adolescent starts their period. Often, parents learn something new as well.

  • It is up to you. We prefer mixed-sex groups because they offer valuable opportunities for empathy and understanding; however, you should also evaluate your child's comfort level when planning for the group. The same material is taught regardless of the class's composition.

  • We do not want costs to be a barrier for anyone to attend our workshops. Please contact us if the class cost prevents you or your child from attending.
